The so-called “Transition,” launched just a few years before the story begins, has reshaped every aspect of life. Rather, at the command of government officials who want credit for reducing “overpopulation, poverty, crime,” the nation has turned to cannibalism. This is not to say that everyone has become a vegetarian. Beef, pork, and poultry were swiftly banned and killed “because they’d been infected by a virus that was fatal to humans,” Bazterrica writes. The action takes place in what appears to be the near future, in an unnamed country beset by a viral illness that has incited “mass hysteria.” GGB, as the malady is known, was first detected in animals. As English-language readers are about to learn, it’s a chilling and alarmingly prophetic book. Tender Is the Flesh was first published in Spanish in 2017, earning its Argentinian author the Premio Clarín, one of the nation’s top literary prizes. For Marcos, reality is every bit as disturbing as his nightmares. In another, he stands amid tree limbs strewn with “eyes, hands, human ears, and babies.” Daybreak, alas, brings him no relief. In one, he watches helplessly as a wolf consumes his son. Marcos Tejo, the protagonist of Agustina Bazterrica’s taut and thought-provoking second novel, is tormented by horrifying dreams.

She also struggles with things like parental expectations, tension in friendships, fitting in among her peers, crushes, and so on. Overall, the portrayal of disability seemed pretty good to me based on my knowledge. I prefer reading and writing alone in my room over parties and such. Veda is stubborn but a bit aloof, preferring dance to socializing. society values engineering, my passion is creative writing. Her mother pushes her toward engineering and science, but her true passion lies with dance. Veda is a very relatable character for me. The author’s description of movement and affect draws you into Veda’s physical and emotional experiences. I tend to like prose better, but some poetry is just so great that it makes me wish I were any good at writing it (my high school poetry was…terrible).Ī Time to Dance is told in beautifully evocative language, rich with detail and figurative language. I have a somewhat ambivalent relationship with poetry. So I already read a book by Padma Venkatraman, Climbing the Stairs, but unlike that book, A Time to Dance is written in verse rather than prose. When she gets into an accident that results in her right leg being amputated below the knee, she must find a way to cope with the loss and regain her dance skills. My Summary: Veda has a passion for dancing and is a competitive dancer of traditional Indian Bharatanatyam. Note: I read this book as part of the #DiversityDecBingo reading challenge. “Fracking” is shorthand for “hydraulic fracturing,” a process used to extract oil and gas locked in dense rock formations thousands of feet beneath Earth’s surface. Before we dig into some of these issues, let’s get one thing straight: What is fracking, anyway? One thing is certain: Fracking has become one of the most contentious debates of our time. Others argue that fracking is creating health problems today-and that we have no idea what sorts of issues will pop up 10, 20, 30 years from now. The industry calls it a modern oil and gas revolution. And, you know what? It’s difficult to know what to think. We read about fracking in newspapers we see it on the evening news we hear it in political stump speeches. There it is, that word- frack-with just two small letters separating it from one of the most vulgar, reviled words in the English language.
